Eating with Braces

Now the braces are placed on your teeth, they are your best friends for the next little while and you need to know how to get along and take care of them during your orthodontic journey!

Eating proper foods, minimizing sugar intake and getting enough sleep are essential during your treatment.  Your braces are precise appliances that can be damaged by eating hard foods.  Some soft and sticky foods can cause tooth decay and loosen or dislodge your braces.

Sticky Foods to avoid with braces

Sticky foods can get stuck to your braces and pull the wire out of your braces. Sticky food is not good and can damage your braces. Some examples of sticky food to avoid are:

  • Caramel
  • Gum (sugar free or regular)
  • Licorice
  • Starburst
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Tootsie rolls
  • Toffee

Hard foods to avoid with braces

Eating hard foods can damage the braces on your teeth, which can be quite expensive to replace. Examples of hard food to avoid:

  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Bread crust
  • Chips
  • Corn on the cobs
  • Hard taco shells
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Pizza crust

Avoid Sugary Food

Eating excessive sugary food can cause common dental problems to develop, like cavities and gum disease. Minimize your sugar consumption can help you achieve a healthier smile without the problems of cavities and gum diseases.

Foods to consider when you have braces

Stay with soft food and cut your food into small pieces. Put the food between your teeth and use your teeth to chew the food. Do not use your braces to chew the food. Use common sense when choosing food to put in your mouth and avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens and pencils. Slow down and take your time to eat and enjoy your food.
